White feminism is a term used to describe forms of feminism that focus on the issues of white woman while failing to address distinct forms of oppression faced by women of color and other marginalized groups.
Taylor Swift is no stranger to her fair share of criticism. She uses feminism as a way to deflect real and honest conversations around her behavior. She uses feminism as a “get out of jail free card” and never takes the necessary steps to actually stand for things that are currently happening within marginalized communities.
Let’s walk down memory lane:
Taylor Swift was seen with Matt Healy holding hands in May of last year. Now, if you didn’t know, Matt Healy was under intense backlash and scrutiny when he was caught mocking Ice Spice’s ethnicity on a podcast, while also mocking API accents, In 2014, he claimed that ISIS and Islam are the same thing and ignored users who were trying to explain why his statements were inaccurate and dangerous, and he also revealed on a podcast that he watched pornography from a site that is known for white men sexually degrading and humiliating women of color.
*Disclaimer: I’ve only included a portion of what Matt has said/done.
Back in 2021, The show Ginny & Georgia had a line in one of the scenes that was played by Antonia Gentry. In this scene, Ginny (Antonia Gentry) says, “You go through men faster than Taylor Swift.” Taylor took to her Twitter to express her dislike for the show and that the joke was sexist and lazy. Because of this response from Taylor Swift, her fanbase decided to spew racist comments towards the actor.
Moving on to her album…..🙄
Back in April, Taylor’s album “Tortured Poets” was currently under a lot of backlash. There is a line in her song “I Hate It Here” that says, “My friends used to play a game where we would pick a decade we wished we could live in instead of this, I’d say the 1830s, but without all the racists and getting married off for the highest bid.”
