TW: Mentions of abuse, SA, murder, kidnapping, and stalking.
Dark romance is a subgenre of romance novels that feature darker themes and mature content. These books often have morally gray characters and plots that include trauma, violence, and taboo topics. Some common tropes in dark romance include Mafia, Stalking, Kidnapping, Abuse, and Forbidden love (direct quote from wusf.org).
Dark romance can cross a lot of lines in regard to something being romance or abusive. A lot of books get away with labelling something a romance and the female main character is being abused by the male main character. You start to question how these two characters are supposed to fall in love.
Having dark themes aren’t a problem, but having dark themes throughout the book or in film that is being placed on the female character by the male lead is problematic. Murder can be justified. You can’t justify, sexual assault, abuse, kidnapping, stalking, misogyny, etc. These tropes are not necessary to create an amazing plot and interesting characters.
Trying to figure out why they labelled this a romance.
